Joining the Wikia Language Brigade does not require an application. You do not have to be allowed or to go through a test in order to become a member, you only need to put yourself on our memberlists. For English, this list can be found at Portal:English/brigadiers. All other languages can be found at Category:Brigadiers.

On both the English list and the lists of any (or preferably all) of the other languages that you are capable of, you have to put your name, proficiency level (babel) and availability. If you know only English, or don't want to be active in any other languages that you know, you are of course free to put yourself on only one list.

Tips Edit

If you feel uncomfortable editing code, here are a few tips to help you along the process:

  • Start with the smallest language, so that the amount of code doesn't scare you away.
  • Follow by example: look at the other users whose names are already in the list.
  • Use the preview mode before you publish your edit, to see if everything appears correctly.
  • Don't forget to add yourself to every language you speak, not just your mother tongue.

Getting started Edit

Since the template code will be viewed in source mode, it will require a bit of code knowledge for you to add your name. You will need to make use of the template WLB-user/en, of which an empty version is usually present already and should look like this:

|name   =
|babel  =
|status = }}

Name Edit

Behind name =, you will add your username: make sure you type it correctly and use uppercase where necessary, since the template is case-sensitive. For example,

|name   = Yatalu

Babel Edit

Babel is your language proficiency level. To add it however, you'll need to know it first. Even though the WLB template has a really short list (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, N), there is a more detailed explanation behind it, which you can read at Babel. In this case we assume a near-native English speaker, so the example would continue with,

|babel  = 4

Status Edit

As status, you will need to add your availability. Options:

  • available: you are available to do translations/corrections
  • busy: you are semi-busy, or already working on other translations/corrections
  • unavailable: you have no time for translations/corrections
  • inactive: you will have no time for a longer period of time

This is probably the most variable element of your little section, since you may want to update it regularly. At the moment however, you will most likely put yourself as an active translator and therefore type,

|status = available}}

Result Edit

This means that the completed version will look somewhat like this,

|name   = Yatalu
|babel  = 4
|status = available }}

Now what?Edit

You just joined, what happens next? You can take a look at Portal:English to connect with other users and see what there is to do on this wiki. If you feel like going right to translating/correcting, Translate:Requests and Correct:Requests may have requests for you to work on!
